What to Do Before a Softball Showcase: A Recruiting Checklist
The countdown to your next softball showcase is on! You've been putting in the work at practice, preparing to compete against talented teams, and looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of college coaches. But are you making the most of your opportunities before the showcase begins?
From researching college programs and connecting with coaches to preparing your recruiting profile, the steps you take beforehand can help you make the most of your experience. Whether you're attending your first showcase or actively navigating the college recruiting process, here are four steps to help you arrive prepared, confident, and ready to compete.
1. Research College Programs Attending Your Showcase
Before your next softball showcase, take some time to research the college programs that may be in attendance. Understanding which schools align with your academic and athletic goals can help you focus your recruiting efforts and identify opportunities to connect with coaches.
At the request of the college coaches, Connect Sports does not release the coaches attending list prior to the start of the event. However, previous year's attendance lists are always available and are a great starting point. Check out the 2025 Scenic City Fall attending coaches list!
As you explore potential schools, consider more than their softball programs. Your college experience will extend well beyond the field, so it's important to find a school that supports your academic, athletic, and personal goals.
Our partner, SportsRecruits, offers tools to help student-athletes discover college programs, research potential schools, and organize their recruiting interests.
Once you've identified a few programs that stand out, create a list of schools you'd like to learn more about or contact before the showcase.
Remember: A program appearing on an attendance list doesn't guarantee a coach will watch your games. However, doing your research ahead of time can help you approach the weekend with a clearer recruiting plan.
2. Explore All-Star Games & College Camps Before the Showcase
At select Connect Sports events, your opportunity to connect with college coaches can begin before tournament play even starts. These individual experiences are designed with the athlete in mind to receive individualized instruction and make meaningful connections with college coaches.
If you're attending Scenic City, Circle City, or Bluegrass Dreams, be sure to explore the All Star Games and College Camps available in conjunction with your event.
Compete in an All Star Game
All Star Games offer athletes another opportunity to showcase their abilities in a competitive environment outside of their regular travel teams. Playing alongside unfamiliar teammates and competing against talented athletes can give college coaches another perspective on your game.
These experiences also provide opportunities to demonstrate qualities that extend beyond individual performance, including communication, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership.
Learn From College Coaches at a Camp
College Camps provide a different kind of recruiting opportunity, giving athletes the chance to learn from college coaches through instruction, drills, and skill development.
Depending on the camp format, athletes may have opportunities to:
- Receive instruction and feedback from college coaches.
- Demonstrate their skills, effort, and coachability.
- Experience different coaching styles and expectations.
- Ask questions and learn more about collegiate softball.
- Build familiarity with coaches and programs of interest.
While All Star Games emphasize competition, College Camps create opportunities for instruction and learning. Both can help athletes gain valuable experience before their showcase games begin.
Plan Ahead: Check your upcoming Connect Sports event for available All Star Games and College Camps. Registration requirements, eligibility, and participating college programs may vary by event, so be sure to review the details and secure your spot in advance.
3. Update Your Recruiting Profile
Before college coaches begin reviewing your information, make sure your recruiting profile is ready to represent you. Your SportsRecruits profile gives coaches a central place to learn about your athletic abilities, academic background, accomplishments, and upcoming events. An accurate, updated profile can also make your pre-showcase outreach more effective by giving coaches easy access to the information you've shared.
Your Pre-Showcase Profile Rundown
- Athlete information: Confirm your name, graduation year, position, travel team, and jersey number.
- Academic information: Update your school information, GPA when appropriate, academic achievements, and relevant coursework.
- Video highlights: Make sure your highlight reel features recent footage that demonstrates your abilities.
- Athletic accomplishments: Include relevant awards, statistics, All-Tournament Team selections, and other recognition.
- Upcoming events: Add your showcase schedule and other recruiting opportunities.
- Contact information: Confirm that your recruiting contacts and travel coach information are accurate.
4. Contact College Coaches Before the Event
Once you've researched potential college programs and explored available recruiting opportunities, it's time to introduce yourself. Reaching out to college coaches before a softball showcase gives you an opportunity to express your interest, share your upcoming schedule, and provide the information they need to evaluate you.
What Should You Include in a Pre-Showcase Email?
Our partner, SportsRecruits, recommends contacting college coaches approximately 7–10 days before an upcoming recruiting event with the details they'll need to find you.
Your email should be short, personal, and easy to navigate.
A strong pre-showcase email should include:
- Your information: Name, graduation year, position, travel team, and jersey number.
- Event details: Name, dates, and location of the upcoming showcase.
- Your game schedule: Game times, field locations, and opponents, when available.
- A personal connection: A specific reason you're interested in the college or softball program.
- Your recruiting profile: A direct link to your SportsRecruits profile and recent highlight videos. Messages sent through SportsRecruits automatically include a tracked profile link, so coaches can reach your full profile in one click.
- Coach contact information: Your travel coach's name and contact details.
If you've already communicated with a coach, use your message to provide an update and let them know where they can watch you compete.
For athletes making their first introduction, focus on sharing who you are, why you're interested in the program, and what you hope to accomplish in your recruiting journey.
For additional guidance, explore SportsRecruits' Emailing College Coaches resource, which includes a sample email template specifically designed for outreach before a recruiting event.
Remember: NCAA recruiting communication rules vary by division and recruiting stage. While athletes can generally initiate communication, a coach's ability to respond or interact may be limited by applicable rules. Don't assume a lack of response means a program isn't interested.
